Tv documentary - Genre Theory

Documentary codes and conventions

The purpose of a documentary is to document, to report with evidence something that has actually happened. It can show this using actuality footage, or reconstructions. It can use a narrators voice over to anchor the meaning or rely on the participants themselves with prephas occasional comments from an un scene narrator.

2. Current affairs
(topicality)

Radio and TV use documentaries alot in there scheduling

Audience research is vital

Documentaries have different styles eg. Panaroma (serious)

Different techniques

1. Observation
(camera isn't there, unseen)
2. Interview
(don't look at the camera they look at the person who is interviewing them)
3. Narrative
(Builds a scene of dramatic conflict, there has to be a defiant beginning, middle and end)
4. Exposition
(Line of argument, what is it saying)
5. Fully narrated
(Off scene voice over, voice of god)
6. Mixed documentaries
(Combine interviews, observation, narrative and found footage)
7. Vox pops
(Street interview with the general public)
