Formal Proposal

Formal Proposal- The topic of this documentary is male grooming. The style is mixed. It will be aired on BBC3 at 8.30pm as it fits with BBC3’s young target audience. The topic of this documentary would more likely appeal to males between the ages of 16 and 25.

We conducted a questionnaire as our primary research to find out more about our target audience. For secondary research, we searched cosmetics websites (such as Boots.com and Clarins.com) and websites exclusively for male grooming products (such as Mankind.com) We also looked on the Men’s Health magazine website and a YouTube clip hosted by beauty expert Ahmed Zambarakji to find male grooming tips. Another part of our secondary research was collecting images of male celebrities that both do no grooming and a lot of grooming.

In terms of narrative structure, we are going to open the documentary with vox pops and several interviews with varied people (Someone who does no grooming, someone who does grooming, a male hairdresser and a shop worker.)

The documentary will show both different side of the spectrum, a history of male grooming and what social groups do it. The resources we require are a video camera, a tripod, a still digital camera and Adobe Premier Pro editing programme.

Evaluation of 'It's Good to Talk'

As a class we watched every ones videos and evaluated them individually and gave our views some being good and some being bad for them to improve. This is what feedback we were given as a group.

Good Things-
1. The mise en scene
2. The framing of the interview her face was 1/3 in the shot
3. Good choice of music
4. Clear interview

Bad things/things to improve-
1. There should always be a music bed in the background and not only in certain parts
2. There was shaky camera work, in the future use a tripod
3. Illustrate cutaways to what they are saying

Therefore when we complete our final documentary we will look back at this and improve on the things that where bad so that next time our documentary will be perfect. From giving each other feedback it has helped me realise how to make a better documentary and what is expected of you next time.

Finished video

Editing 'It's Good to Talk'

After finishing our filming it was time to edited our video. By doing this we imported our filming into an Adobe Premier Pro document. We imported the right parts of the video into the time line at the bottom. To start off our video we needed a title at the beginning so we changed the background to black and the title to white this is so it was able to stand out.

After we had imported our video into one time line we started working on editing the interview. There were two windows were we could watch the interview one was for editing parts out and the other was the final video. In the interview we asked question but for a documentary the question had to be edited out so you only heard the answers.

In between each question there had to be cut aways of still and moving images after the interviewee had spoken. We had a variety of shots that either appeared when she was talking or after she was talking. For the images to appear when she was talking we had to edited these in a different way this means we had to left click on the image and cut it and delete part of it so we could place it above what we wanted.

At the end once we had finished editing the interview and cutaways we had to add a music bed. The song we used was called 'Call on me' this linking to the Mobile theme because of the lyrics 'Call'. Because of the speaking in our documentary we had to edited the sound so that it became quieter when she was speaking and became louder when there was a cut away. We did this by moving dots up when we wanted it loud and down when we wanted it quiet.

Filming 'It's Good to Talk'

We had one lesson to get all the filming done so we had to manage our time wisely this meant planning each of our shot including where we are filming it, how long it takes and who we will be filming. The one of the most important parts of the filming was the interview because this is the main thing included in our interview and without this our documentary would not make sense, therefore we filmed that first making sure the mise en scene was right and linked in with the theme of the documentary also the interviewee was facing the interviewer and not the camera and the interviewees face was three quarters of the way up the shot. After filming the interview we realised that the filming might have been a bit shaky because we didn't use a tri pod due to this being our practise and preliminary task, so next time we know to use one. In between each question we needed cut aways. Me, Emma and Emily then filmed the cutaways these included a panning shots, medium close ups, zooms and extreme close ups. Although we didn't finish all the filming in one lesson we had an extension to get the last shots of what we needed at the beginning of the next lesson. With this help we were able to complete our cutaways of each other and mobile phones successfully.

Planning 'It's Good to Talk'

To help us plan this documentary we used a storyboard and drew mini pictures of what we were going to film and a little bit of information about the shot and the type of shot we will film. For example we wrote 'medium close up' under a picture therefore this helped us while filming because when looking at the mini image we remembered how we wanted it to look.

The props we used where a mobile phone

A camera

and a video recorder

To film our interview we wanted the mise en scene to link in with the theme of mobiles so we filmed in a media/technology room in our school. She was to sit in front of a computer with a phone website on in the background this was because we wanted it to look like she worked with mobile phones.
